Last weekend I was helping some high school girls play with Mary Kay’s summer looks.  It was great to see how much fun they had with the Coastal Colors Eye Palette, and how natural and beautiful they looked after applying the shimmery eye shadows, mineral powder foundation, and a touch of Hawaiian Sunset Gloss!

The girls were telling me how they had been watching One Tree Hill on Monday nights and noticed that the makeup artist was using Mary Kay’s products with all the beautiful ladies on the show!

The program has done a few special segments showing how you can use the same Mary Kay colors and technics to get the looks of Brooke, Peyton, and Haley. You can see these clips online at: http://www.cwtv.com/thecw/marykay.  They are quick and helpful to see how to apply products like Island Bronze Eyesicles, Mineral Bronzing Powder, and Lip Liner.  I highly recommend watching the three for some tips on a new summer look for you that is quick and easy.

Thought I’d share another great review I received recently from a new customer when I emailed to see how she was liking her new skincare products:

I’m really happy with everything. So much so that I finally threw away my old powder and cleanser.  I feel like my skin looks so much better.  Between the Miracle Set and the mineral powder I think my skin looks much better moisturized without looking or feeling oily.  Also, I am starting to notice some change in the appearance of the lines around my eyes. I’ve also had far fewer blemishes start and the ones I’ve got heal much more quickly. – L

What she is using:  TimeWise Miracle Set, and Mineral Powder Foundation

How long she has been using it:  3 weeks!

From O, The Oprah Magazine, April 2009 – can’t miss it with Michelle Obama on the cover!

“Mary Kay Concealer (bottom, $10; marykay.com).  For us, an awardworthy performance means being utterly imperceptible — so thank you for not noticing us!  Whether you’re looking for a wand that brushes a smudgeproof concealer over blemishes in seconds, a mineral-infused cream that doesn’t look chalky on the darkest complexions, or a silky waterproof formula that camouflages dark circles all day, we’ve got you covered.”

One other reason I personally love this concealer is that it is so easy to find the perfect match.  The shades correspond with your MK foundation whether cream, tinted moisturizer, or mineral powder foundation, so you know exactly which concealer you need!

Do you remember reading the section in Real Simple magazine where they show you alternative uses for every day items?  Well I have one for you!  I was about to recycle my used Mary Kay Mineral Powder Foundation jar the other day, when I realized what a nice jar it was.  We were also in the process of reorganizing our office space and voila!  A cute container to store paperclips in!  I can’t wait to use my next jar up to have another one for rubberbands, or tacks, or pins, etc. The options are endless.  If you come up with a good idea, please do comment and let us know!

Recently I helped a friend with the makeup for her wedding.  She asked if there was anything to do to make her pores appear smaller, which prompted a little research on my part.  I knew that microdermabrasion over time can make pores appear smaller, minimize fine lines, and can also minimize the appearance of some scars.  So I recommended Mary Kay’s Microdermabrasion Set and told her to use 2-3 times a week.  I wasn’t sure if I would see a difference in the two weeks we had until the wedding.  However, when the day came, I was truly impressed with the results as her pores did appear smaller only two weeks later!

And in a study done by an independent research facility, Mary Kay’s Microdermabrasion Set had these results after only one week of use on the panelists:

85% saw improvement in skin texture
73% saw a reduction in fine lines
71% saw smaller-looking pores

Impressive.  At $55, Mary Kay’s Microdermabrasion Set is well worth the money. Especially when you consider that a popular local salon charges $420 for only 4 sessions of microdermabrasion treatment!

Another tip I learned in my research was to use a primer on the area with larger looking pores, allow to dry, and then follow with desired foundation.  I used MK’s Eye Primer on the area, allowed to dry, and then followed with the Mineral Powder Foundation.  It worked great!  And it looked more natural then using concealer, which can be too noticeable if covering a larger area of skin.

So there is the ticket: Mary Kay’s Microdermabrasion Set for minimizing large pores in a matter of weeks, and Mary Kay’s Eye Primer for a quick cover-up job.

For all you ladies who are loving your mineral powder foundation, here is some helpful information when it comes to applying it!

I hear this a lot, “I love mineral powder foundation! But it’s so messy!”  If this is you, then I hope this will be helpful information to you:  Mineral powder foundation is the least messy of foundations when applied correctly, and here is how.

The best way to apply a mineral powder foundation is of course with the specifically designed brush.  These brushes have soft bristles, shorter than some brushes, and firm.

  • With the lid still on your foundation jar, gently give the jar an upside down one shake to release a small amount of powder into the sifter.  Open the jar and hold your jar and lid in the same hand.
  • Use your brush to pick up the powder in the sifter, and then tap off any extra powder on the edge of the jar.
  • Swirl the brush in the lid so that the powder is distributed evenly across the bristles.  This also ensures that no powder falls when you lift the brush to your face.  If any powder falls off onto your counter or clothes, there is too much powder on the brush. Tap off extra powder and keep the lid as your clear “swirling” space, leaving any excess powder in the sifter.
  • In small circular motions, apply the powder to your face evenly in small layers. Mineral powder is best applied in several light layers, as buildable coverage, as opposed to one thick layer.
  • If you need more powder in the sifter, simply give the jar a gentle side shake, or you can put the lid on and do it as you did in the beginning.
  • Continue this pattern of powder on brush, tap, swirl, apply, until you’ve reached your desired coverage.
  • Let the powder (and minerals) warm to your skin, and you will see the smooth flawless, but natural, coverage.
Of course this can seem like a long process, all written out, when in reality I have found it to be much quicker to apply than my previous liquid/cream foundation.  Not to mention all the other benefits of a mineral powder.  It’s one of my favorite products!

Here is an interesting tidbit of important information for all of you ladies who wear a mineral powder foundation! There are several mpf’s on the market today claiming spf protection.  It seems like a great idea to have your foundation and spf coverage in one, however, according to Leslie Baumann, M.D. you would need to apply your mpf on average 14 times as thick as the normal person does to achieve the claimed spf in the mineral powder formula. So, it is important to wear a sunscreen with an spf of 15 or more before your foundation, then apply your mineral powder foundation or cream foundation.

By the way, I am a huge fan of mineral powder foundation – it is on the top of my favorite products! If you want to try a great mineral powder foundation, I personally love Mary Kay’s.  It is light, easy to apply, great for your skin, comes in great shades, and is so reasonably priced ($18 jar that lasted me months!)  It is so easy to apply and gives me such great coverage I have completely switched over from my ex-love Medium Coverage Foundation.

“I love the [MK] tinted moisturizer! I was just on a vacation where I was in hot weather, by the pool, each day. I applied my moisturizer in the morning and I never burned. I was so happy with the effectiveness of this moisturizer to protect my skin from UVA and UVB rays. As a busy mom I also love to apply it in the morning, throw on a little blush over it and walk out the door. It applies evenly with a nice sheer cover. It’s definitely a must-have for me!” (from Jenny)

In the summer, your skin needs a few things:  Sun Protection, Moisture, Light Coverage.  But what most of us don’t need is a bunch of extra steps in the morning!  Voila – Tinted Moisturizer!  This is a great option for those who want a sheer coverage, protection from UVA AND UVB rays, and want a light and effective moisturizer.  Not to mention the savings of combining your sunscreen, moisturizer, and foundation!

I’m all about saving time in the bathroom.  Before becoming a mom, I remember I would give myself an hour to slowly get ready!  An hour?!!  That is embarrassing to admit!  I was just never pushed to be showered, hair dried, makeup on, dressed and have breakfast in 9 minutes total like I have to now.  Oh, and that includes trying to maneuver with a little one crawling up my ankles and handing her cheerios to give myself a couple more seconds of time.
