Last weekend I was helping some high school girls play with Mary Kay’s summer looks.  It was great to see how much fun they had with the Coastal Colors Eye Palette, and how natural and beautiful they looked after applying the shimmery eye shadows, mineral powder foundation, and a touch of Hawaiian Sunset Gloss!

The girls were telling me how they had been watching One Tree Hill on Monday nights and noticed that the makeup artist was using Mary Kay’s products with all the beautiful ladies on the show!

The program has done a few special segments showing how you can use the same Mary Kay colors and technics to get the looks of Brooke, Peyton, and Haley. You can see these clips online at: http://www.cwtv.com/thecw/marykay.  They are quick and helpful to see how to apply products like Island Bronze Eyesicles, Mineral Bronzing Powder, and Lip Liner.  I highly recommend watching the three for some tips on a new summer look for you that is quick and easy.

Thought I’d share another great review I received recently from a new customer when I emailed to see how she was liking her new skincare products:

I’m really happy with everything. So much so that I finally threw away my old powder and cleanser.  I feel like my skin looks so much better.  Between the Miracle Set and the mineral powder I think my skin looks much better moisturized without looking or feeling oily.  Also, I am starting to notice some change in the appearance of the lines around my eyes. I’ve also had far fewer blemishes start and the ones I’ve got heal much more quickly. – L

What she is using:  TimeWise Miracle Set, and Mineral Powder Foundation

How long she has been using it:  3 weeks!

Try of these new looks, just out for spring!  Celebrity Makeup Artist, Ildiko, created 4 looks this season with this new color pallet:  Coastal Colors. The shades are gorgeous, reminiscent of the sky, ocean, and beach – perfect for this season of summer and being outdoors.

If you are of an ivory skin tone like I am, you may also feel extremely white in the winter.  Especially in Seattle, with the lack of enough days to catch some vitamin D rays, I am looking pale!  Please someone tell me pale can be in!  I’m not about to head to the tanning beds for some color and expensive cancer enhancers.

I came across this soft and pretty look.  The model’s eyes have Mineral Eye Colors of Precious Pink, Sweet Plum, and Raisin. These colors can do double duty and create bold eyes, but in this case they are applied softly with the Precious Pink, blending them to a glowing look. Cinnamon Stick Blush gives her a rosy glow, along with the Frosted Rose lipstick and Gold Rush gloss to give her a natural and warm tone.  Ivory skin tone is saved from a “death warmed over” to a beautiful winter face!

Cat Eyes:  It’s all about the eyeliner, especially liquid eyeliner.  If you have been considering trying a little something dramatic like cat eyes, this would be the season.  Some cat eye looks like this one, are fitting only for a night out, or for the really bold personality.  But even for the average person, it doesn’t have to be too dramatic.  Angelina Jolie’s cat eye look is terrific.  Although, she’s not a good example of the “average person.”  Still, check it out, it’s gorgeous.

Here is a helpful article “How to Apply Eyeliner” with directions for using liquid eyeliner to create the cat eye look.  Have fun with this fall trend!

Fresh Face:  Focus on getting flawless skin, with a natural soft look, and a touch of color on the lips.  MK’s Even Complexion Essence with the TimeWise Miracle Set is a great start to silky smooth skin. Apply your Mineral Powder Foundation, or Sheer Mineral Pressed Powder to even the skin tone with a soft coverage.  One of the secrets to this look is to use your bronzer to add contour to your face by applying it not for the summer sun kissed look, but using it to frame your face by applying along your hairline. Use soft eye colors in shades of white and cream. And finally accentuate your lips with a warm lip color. Simply elegant.

With the recent arrival of Autumn, I made the trip up to the attic to pull down all my sweaters and long pants, and put away my summer skirts and tanks.  And I made a mental note to try a little something new with my look this week.  For most women, this means buying a new wardrobe.  But the best kept secret of updating your look may simply be a new lip or eye color.

Here are 6 reasons you should consider a more simple approach to acquiring that exciting new look this fall, and skip the shopping splurge at Nordstrom.  1) A new makeup look is fresh and attractive.  2) You can wear it with almost anything, anywhere.  3) You get more wear out of it than a new outfit because you can wear it everyday.  4) You feel great in it every time you wear it.  5) It’s cheaper than a new wardrobe.  6) No dry-cleaning required.

Now let’s talk about what to try this fall season.

Makeup artist Samantha Lennon at www.beautynewsnyc.com sums up the fall 2008 beauty trends, “I’ve been seeing previews and I think this fall, we will see the continuation of the sculpted, designed face, with contouring under cheekbones. For smoky eyes, purples and grays will reign. There will be lots of glitter, too. The glitter will be that 1970s-type look. It’s a very clubby look for the eyes. Oh and how could I forget! Eyebrows will be back this fall, in a big way.”

This week I’ll break down a few of the hottest makeup trends for this fall season so stay tuned for a new tip each day.  You may even want to try them all!

Smokey Eyes and Shimmer: Smokey eyes can be an everyday look by simply applying them lighter, and then with deeper color for the evening.  If you have hazel, green eyes, try smokey eyes with shades of purple and lavender like MK’s Sweet Plum, Iris, Dusty Lilac.  If you have blue eyes or brown eyes, play with shades of gray like MK’s Granite, or even an earthy gold like Vintage Gold or Amber Blaze mixed with shades of olives and greens.  Shimmery and sparkly is what it’s all about for the holiday season!  Stunningly beautiful.  See Marie Claire’s simple how-to for smokey eyes here.

This summer MK was featured on E! with some summer tips that might surprise you: Smokey Eyes with purples and lilacs! It looks terrific and puts a fun spin on the traditional black and greys for smokey eyes. I often hear women say, “Oh, I don’t wear much purple…or blue…or green.” But the key to wearing eyes shades in vibrant colors is that it should not be the color you are wearing, but it should be the color that accentuates your eye color. The purples are subtle and beautiful! Check out this video from E!

Last night I went to a going away party for some friends. I dressed up a bit more than normal but applied my usual makeup. I wish I had used the festive opportunity (which, by the way doesn’t come often for moms with young children) to really have fun with my new mineral eye colors because I saw some great looks where my friends had fun playing with smokey eyes! I was admiring one friend’s eyes and thinking, wow, she really stepped out and tried something new and it looked great!

I have found that most women tend to apply makeup lightly with the goal being a natural look, which is my favorite for every day life. However, when most women experiment with a little more color, they usually feel like it is too much! They aren’t used to seeing their eyes smokey or their lips with a bright shade of color. And yet it looks hot! I’ve watched women try a new lip color and turn to their friends with a skeptical look on their face, and their friends say, “Wow, that looks great on you!” And yet, they take it off, almost scared of the new look! I have to say, I also fall into this sometimes. We get so comfortable in one way of being, we are afraid we’ll lose who we are by trying something new as simple as a new color or look! Or we are afraid people will think we are trying to be someone we aren’t! Yet, most likely, no one is thinking that at all. They are just thinking, “Wow, she looks great and confident in who she is! I should try something new like that!”

I’m going to try having a little more boldness when it comes to trying something new. For instance, a bold lip color is not my first grab from the bag, but that would be a fun place to start. The only problem now is finding a good reason to try that new lip color, and I’m not thinking the kiddie pool or laundry room will be my first place to try.
